Biological Invasions Research Group (BioInv)

The Biological Invasions Research Group (BioInv) is formed by researchers from the Life Sciences Department at the University of Alcalá (UAH). The main research line of BioInv focuses on the impacts of exotic species on ecosystem functioning and on the environmental services that ecosystems provide.

Access our last research project: Diagnosis of Forest Neo-ecosystems in Spain is a scientific research initiative aimed at studying novel forest ecosystems. It is conducted by researchers from the University of Alcalá (UAH) and the CIFOR-CSIC (Forest Research Centre).

The main research lines of the Biological Invasions Group include:

Study of the impact of invasive species on ecosystems, functional diversity and ecosystem services.

Identify of the main functional traits that explain the success of exotic species in different stages of the invasion process

Identify habitat properties that make them more susceptible to invasion

Analyze the interactions between invasive species and the native communities of the receptor ecosystem

Evaluate the invasive risk and impact of exotic species

Biomonitoring of the aquatic ecosystem quality

Evaluation of chemical and biological contaminants in aquatic ecosystems

The researchers of the BioInv group encompass Researchers and Lecturers of the UDE (Unidad Docente de Ecología within the Life Sciences Department at the UAH) together with postdoctoral and predoctoral ones and researchers from other national centers. Further, they closely collaborate with researchers from international (University of Amsterdam, Wageninen University, University of Lisbon, University of Concepción, University of Bio Bio and University of Stellenbosch) centers. We form part of several national and international networks including InvNet (Red Temática sobre Invasiones Biológicas) and European Cost Actions. Noteworthy outputs of the group in the last years include publications in Biological Reviews, New Phytologist, Global Change Biology and Ecology among others.
